what kind of ethernet cable should i get for a ps3?
so i have comcast, and i wanted to get an ethernet cable for my ps3, what kind of ethernet cable do i need? i.e.cat5 or cat6? what’s better and what’s the difference.
Cat5. You don’t need Cat6. Actually, Cat3 would probably be sufficent.
These numbers refer the the quality (for the most part the purity of the copper) of the wire. What this impacts is the speed. For 100 Megabits/Sec (Mb/s), Cat 3 is okay, but Cat 5 is recommended. Then they came up with 1000 Mb/s, or 1 Gibabit/sec, commonly called “Gig-E”. Cat5 is fine for Gig-E. They now have 10Gb/s – really the only computers that have this sort of thing are high capacity servers, like I work with. You can do 10Gb/s with Cat 5, but they recommend Cat6 for 10 Gig-E.
I don’t know what speed your PS3 speaks, but you are going over the internet, so we are talking about speeds on the order of 1 Mb/s to 7.5 Mb/s, at most. You are nowhere near 10 Gig-E.
