Pay as you go cell phones?

I’m getting a cell phone tomorrow, and mom said she’s only letting me get a pay as you go
Which, as I understand, means you have to buy minutes for the phone, as opposed to a plan, which she doesn’t want to sign a contract for
So, I’m just wondering how pay as you go phones work? I know you can buy cards at Walmart for $15 or something
but what do you get for that $15? 15 minutes? an hour?
Also, do minutes get taken away for texting too? 1 text=1 minute? Because that’s kind of ridiculous.. I’ll be spending lots of money for that.

and keep it at $50
versus payin different amounts every month
