Effective Techniques for Bidding on Priceline
Priceline can be one of the best ways to track down an inexpensive hotel room, airfare, or rental car if you have the time and patience to make it work for you. Once you know where you want to go and when you want to go there, it’s time to begin researching the going rates for travel and hotels at your chosen destination. If you can be a little flexible about any aspect of your trip, like the exact dates you want to travel, you will have better luck finding an incredible deal.
Do a Little Research First
Before you begin bidding at Priceline, you need to find out what a reasonable rate for your trip would be in today’s market. Visit sites like Kayak, Orbitz, Expedia, or Travelocity to see what your trip would cost through their listings. The numbers you find on other websites will give you a good baseline for determining how much you should bid for your trip. A smart rule of thumb is to never place a bid that is higher than the price you would receive from another travel site.
Check out Priceline Forums
There are several online forums for people who have used Priceline to book their vacations before. These forums contain helpful information that will assist you in making an informed decision when you are trying to figure out how much to bid. The people on these forums will list their winning bids and they will also list their losing bids, which gives you a range of numbers to work with. Forum members can also provide you with great tips on how to use Priceline even more effectively. You can ask questions and read through discussions of every aspect of booking travel through Priceline.
Start with an Extremely Low Bid
Now that you know how much your trip would cost through a different site and how much other people are paying for their travel through Priceline, it is time to visit the website and place a bid on your trip. Always start with the lowest bid you believe could be accepted. If you receive a warning through the site that your bid might be too low, ignore it and continue with the bidding process. In some cases, your initial bid will be accepted and you will receive your trip for an outstanding price. In other cases, you’ll need to rebid at a slightly higher rate.
Dealing with the 24-hour Rebid Rule
Priceline will only let you make one bid for each trip that you are interested in. You can make another bid if you choose to change some aspect of your trip, however. Changing the dates or the times of travel will give you a new bid. A more complicated tactic is to bid on a trip that includes a hotel with a specific rating when there is not a hotel with that rating in the zip code you have selected. Priceline will offer you a hotel in a nearby zip code if there is no hotel that qualifies within the area you originally selected.
