Can I use my number from my iPhone 3G a 4 on a different network?

So I have another 8 months of my 24 months contract iPhone 3G links, which rely on o2 is. However, I'm buying an iPhone 4 Planning and give my "old" phone, the 3G to my mother. The iPhone 4 is on the 3 network. I would like To know if I transfer my old number to the new 3G phone, but then get another number for my mother (she is not bothered about keeping their old number, but I want to keep!) The only problem is I would have on the iPhone 4, the I can not really afford to buy in one go before (I am a student) and then still pay my £ 35 per month O2 contract purchase, I go for a downgrade my mother was. All I can suggest what I do is to unlock the payment of a £ 20 fee for the iPhone 4 from the three-network, you can use your O2 sim in pop, so you can continue using your old number. With regard to your mother always a number for the 3G, you'll probably get to a pay, as you go SIM cards from O2, or even a Simplicity SIM (where you only pay monthly for only one SIM card), and they may, in the 3G-pop.
