Will cleaning an cell phone earpiece plug help with compatibility?

I have an old phone – a Nokia 6010 – and I need an new hands free earpiece for it. Since the stores do not carry accessories for their older models, I bought one off of ebay that said it would be compatible. When I got it – I plugged it in and the screen message said that it was not compatible. The person who sold it to me said that I should clean the socket by putting alcohol onto the plug and inserting it into the socket several times. I don’t see how in the world that would make any difference – do you? Could it work? I’ll try it – but I don’t have any rubbing alcohol here right now.

If you are getting a message that says it is not compatible, then the connection is fine. If the connection was messed up the phone wouldnt even know you had plugged in an earpiece. Unfortunately I think you bought the wrong earpiece (or were sold the wrong one).
